B1. MR. STEED and MRS. GALE.
Before Mrs. Peel, there was Catherine Gale, played by Honor
Blackman. Because her episodes were not shown in the U.S. until
recently, she's best known to American fans as Pussy Galore in the James
Bond film, Goldfinger. |
B2. CHEMISTRY.
Patrick Macnee: "We took it for granted that Emma and Steed slept
together, but simply didn't dwell on it. We treated sex as naturally
as we would eating. Because we didn't have to bother about sex we
could get on with the plot." |
B3. LIFE AFTER DEATH!.
The Avengers have been resurrected in as (sic) a stage play (1971), a
radio series (1972), The New Avengers (1976), Escapade: The
Avengers USA (1978) and, most recently, the unproduced The Avengers
International (1985). |
B4. PATRICK MACNEE as JOHN
STEED.
Daniel Macnee was born in London on February 6, 1922. He
attended Eton before winning a scholarship to a drama school and began to
act professionally soon after. In 1961, he and Ian Hendry became
The Avengers.
|
B5. DIANA RIGG as EMMA PEEL
Few people remember Diana Rigg's 1973 American tv series, Diana.
In it she played an English fashion coordinator on her own in New York
City. One episode had Macnee as a guest star. |
B6. LINDA THORSON as TARA KING.
It was director John Huston who initially suggested that Linda might be
the right successor to Diana Rigg. A struggling actress at the time,
Linda was too poor to afford a tv set and had never seen The Avengers. |
